From the end you can see Frasier Island

On a clear day Frasier Island is easily visible from here and all the whale watching boats from the Hervey Bay Marina sail past this landmark as they make their way out to find the whales.
This landmark is located in the Urangan suburb of Hervey Bay.

The landmark is now shorter than it was

The landmark use to be over 1km in length. But they removed the end of it for safety reasons.
It no longer has a rail line running it’s full length to carry sugar cane or coal. Gone are the very large pipeline that carried oil from oil tankers.
Today it is mainly used to fish from. At it’s open water end you can catch large fish like Mackerel to the shallower parts where Whiting and Bream are caught.
Tales of Groppers and small Marlins being caught in the past are often heard but the people you speak to are never the person that caught the fish. It always seems to of been there ‘mate’.

Man Made Landmark

The landmark is man made. It was built in 1917 and used loacally sourced turpintine wood.
Currently work is being carried out on it as borers have damaged part of the wood structure. The local council is spending over $2 million to repair the damage from these wood borers.
This Landmark is a tourist attraction in the Hervey Bay area.

No it’s not the Vic Hislop Shark Show.

Local Landmark

The landmark I’m thinking of has a long past. It can be linked to the local sugar cane industry and even to the coal industry.

Today they were filming for a new $35m Australian film called ‘The Reef’. It was interesting to watch as they were filming close to where I was fishing at the time near the Hervey Bay Marina. So as I was fishing I could here the director giving instruction to the crew and actors.
The film stars Damian Walshe Howling and Gyton Grantley (from Underbelly fame) and will also be filmed in Bowen.
Photos below are not the best but show the filming taking place in the water with approx 15 people chest deep with cameras and sound gear.

Toad Fish and Bream

Today we caught bream and a large toad fish – all too small to take home. No dinner tonight lol.

Below is a photo (sorry a little hard to see) of water streching out to Round, Woody and Little Woody Islands. So if your not sure where I am, start ‘googling’ those Island names.

What an amazing sunset we had here Tuesday afternoon.
